Finding Balance in Love After Loss

So my visit with Jess and her talk of building a home that would more than likely have a library had me dreaming of my ideal library. I have ALWAYS loved the idea of having a library in my house. If not an official library, then a corner of a room that would serve as one. In this library there is a fireplace, dark wood desk, dark wood books shelves and the smell of old leather bound books I have lovingly collected over the years (nevermind that I haven't actually started to do that yet...I'm sure I will). In my wildest dreams this library is a two story one with the ladder on wheels deal to real the high up books. Who doesn't want to break into song while gliding across 2 stories worth of books in their own personal home library!? Come on!!

There is always a day bed/lounging type of sofa to curl up on, a blanket thrown over the end so I can curl up, a side table with a steaming cup of tea on it, and an amazing antique floor lamp just over my shoulder. There is a laptop on the dark wood desk that I use to write, but there is also stacks of blank paged books where I jot down ideas, words, themes, and flush out the novels I write. Because, of course with a library like this I am a professional, paid, and paid well, author!

So I've gathered some pictures and pieced them together to make what I think would be my dream library. Hope you enjoy!

I love the dark wood and the ladder in this library. I don't want it to be multiple rooms though...just one is fine thank you.

  • I really love this ceiling. I would want depth and some detail but don't want the hammered tin or ornate painting up there, just something simple and clean.

  • I love the fireplace, large leather chair, and big window in this library. I would need much more shelving and book space though.

I want leather bound books. They don't have to be first edition, but they just look so damn classy in the shelves! It's my belief that you automatically look more educated if you have leather bound books.

An antique dark wood desk like this is a must. I can set up my laptop, store my writing tools (pads and pens...I NEVER write in pencil) and also my thank you card materials, etc. Again, I know it's a masculine look but I think it's clean and classic.

  • I really enjoy this floor lamp. I would want warm lighting in the room. I want candles and fireplace and a dark feel to the room; I actually prefer it kind of masculine. I would just want a good light for reading.

  • I also like these for on the wall somewhere. I love the idea of wall sconces with candles; they feel very romantic.

  • I like this kind of chair for curling up on. Also don't mind the wine that is next to it! It's large, cushioned, would support your back and legs and welcome you for hours upon hours of reading.

This throw blanket could be any number of colors as long as it is soft, warm, and big enough to cover my from chest to feet. I can't stand having cold feet and being 5'10" my feet always stick out of the bottom of normal blankets if I really stretch out...I hate that.

  • This would work as a side table next to my chair. Something simple that I could put my current book on or under, and set my tea on. I like the idea of having a journal and a pen here too so that if something in a book strikes me I can make note of it. There will be no clocks, cell phones, or televisions in my library. There will however probably be an iPod dock.

  • Last but not least would be my trusty cup of tea. A night is not complete without some tea. I love it. I never drink coffee because I hate both the smell and taste of it, but tea....tea I can drink all day any day. I do not like cold tea (unless it is freshly brewed...none of that powder for me) but hot tea has my heart now and forever.

I hate that I can't find the perfect picture, the perfect library. It wouldn't be huge. It would be cozy and comfortable. It would welcome you and then encourage you to lose track of time and stay all day. I would want a big window for seeing outside. I would want it to have natural light that I could use and then shut out if need be. It would have to be in a quieter part of the house...preferably off of my master bedroom and bathroom. I picture myself there and it's like heaven on earth. Someday, I will have said library.
